2015 Young Lawyer of the Year

Michael Roberts, Esq.

Michael B. Roberts, Esq. is a criminal defense attorney and managing member of the firm Roberts & Teeter, located on Easton Avenue in Somerset. Michael is known in the legal community for his knowledge of the law and aggressive advocacy on behalf of his clients.

Besides being published in the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law Journal of Animal and Environmental Law, Michael has also been a speaker at numerous CLE events talking about social media and its effect on criminal law. Recently, Mr. Roberts was published in the Somerset County Clarion for an article regarding the Attorney General’s response to the heroin and opiate problem in New Jersey.

He is a member of the Middlesex County Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, and the Somerset County Bar Association where he is the co-chair of the Young Lawyers Division.  Michael also participates in the MCBA’s Reduced Fee Lawyer Referral Program and the Rutgers University Attorney Referral Program.

Michael graduated from Rutgers University in 2006 with Highest Honors, having majored in philosophy and political science. In 2009, he obtained his J.D. from Rutgers School of Law in Newark. While in law school, Michael interned with the Federal Public Defender’s Office and devoted countless hours to working with the Urban Legal Clinic where he represented criminal defendants in the Special Remand Court of Essex County. Upon graduation, Michael received the sole Scholastic Achievement Award for Excellence in Criminal Law.

Prior to entering private practice, Michael successfully completed a clerkship with the Hon. Edward M. Coleman, PJ, Civil. He then spent the next fifteen months practicing criminal defense in New Brunswick. The following year, Michael practiced with a Princeton firm defending doctors, nurses, and hospitals accused of medical malpractice. Today he limits his practice to criminal and municipal defense work with the firm he co-founded.

Aside from practicing law, Michael is an assistant coach to the Rutgers University mock trial team. For the past five years he has worked tirelessly with the Rutgers University students teaching trial skills and traveling with the team when they compete across the country. In his spare time he enjoys skiing, hiking, camping, and anything involving outdoor adventure.
