Hon. Peter J. Barnes, III to be Honored as the
2015 David Pavlovsky "Service to the Bar” Award Winner

In recognition of his continuous outstanding contributions and service to the Middlesex County Bar Associaiton, Hon. Peter J. Barnes, III, will receive the MCBA’s 2015 David Pavlovsky "Service to the Bar” Award. The award presentation will be held aboard the St. Charles Riverboat in Perth Amboy during the MCBA's Annual Installation of Officers & Trustees Dinner on May 20, 2015.

The Pavlovsky Award was created in honor of the late David Pavlovsky (w/late wife Ceil in photo on left), an active member of the Bar Association from 1935 until his passing in April of 1995. David was the quintessential "Middlesex County” attorney, dedicated to his family, his profession, his community and the Association. The award is presented to a lawyer who carries on David’s commitment to service and represents the best of the Middlesex County Bar Association.

Pete is a graduate of Gettysburg College, Fairleigh Dickinson University (MBA), and the Widener University School of Law. He was as a Law Clerk for the Hon. John E. Bachman and the Hon. Barnett E. Hoffman. He currently is a sole practitioner in Edison. His practice includes the following areas: personal injury; worker’s compensation; Title 59 defense; civil rights defense; family law; real estate; municipal law; bankruptcy; and commercial law. In addition to the New Jersey Supreme Court and the Federal District Court for New Jersey, he is admitted to the United States Supreme Court Bar.

Pete is extremely active in civic activities. He currently serves as Senator in the 18th Legislative District and is Vice Chair of the Law and Public Safety Committee.  He was an Assemblyman for 7 years and was Chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee. He also was the prime sponsor of several bills important to lawyers, including the creation of an electronic filing system for Superior Court; supporting NJ Legal Services; and reforming the bail system.

Prior to his legislative experience, Pete was a three-term member of the Edison Township Municipal Council, serving as Council President; Vice President; Planning Board member; Insurance Commission; Chairman of the Finance Committee; Housing Authority member; Public Safety Commission; liaison to the Board of Education; Open Space Committee member; panelist to the Edison Economic Summit; and liaison to the Environmental Commission.

Pete has also served his community as a Board Member and Legal Adviser for Kiddie Keep Well Camp - a program for disadvantaged children from throughout the county - manager and coach in the North Edison Baseball and Softball League; coach for the St. Francis CYO basketball team, as well as coach in the Metuchen-Edison YMCA Basketball League. On Sundays he served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Francis Cathedral, where he was a member of the Parish Council.

Over the years, Pete has received a variety of awards and honors, including: Boy Scouts of America, Good Turn Award; Edison Wetlands Association Award for Environmental Excellence; inaugural inductee into the J.P. Stevens High School Hall of Fame; Middlesex County Hungarian-American Democratic Organization Distinguished Service Award; Life Member Metuchen Rotary Club; and the Central Jersey Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Irishman of the Year Award.

Pete has worked tirelessly for the betterment of the legal profession. He is a Past President of the Middlesex County Bar Association, having served during the 2000-2001 term. He also serves as Chair of the David Pavlovsky "Service to the Bar” Award Committee. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, and was elected to the Nominating Committee for two terms. He also served as a member of the By-Laws Committee. In his on-going efforts to serve fellow members of the legal profession he has served as an Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, and is frequently asked to continue to act as an arbitrator in cases.

Pete has served as a friend and mentor to dozens of attorneys throughout the county and state. It is commonplace for him to receive two or three telephone calls a day from attorneys asking him for advice and/or help with a legal matter, which he always cheerfully gives. He has always taken a positive stance in protecting the integrity of the legal profession.

Frequently quoted in local newspapers on a variety of legal and non-legal issues, you can rest assured that Pete is a strong voice of reason in often tumultuous circumstances. The public is well served by his unceasing dedication to fairness and doing the right thing.

Peter resides in Edison with his wife Katie and their three children, Meg (22), Jack (19) and Kenny (17).
