Manny Gerstein to be Honored as the
2014 David Pavlovsky "Service to the Bar” Award Winner

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to administration of justice and practice of law, Manny Gerstein, of Gerstein & Richman in Edison, will receive the Association’s 2014 David Pavlovsky "Service to the Bar” Award. The award presentation will be held at The Pines Manor in Edison, during the joint Middlesex/Union/ Somerset Bar Dinner on February 3, 2014.

Spearheaded by past presidents Peter J. Barnes, III and Jeffrey Green, the Pavlovsky Award was created in honor of the late David Pavlovsky (w/late wife Ceil in photo on left), an active member of the Bar Association from 1935 until his passing in April of 1995. David was the quintessential "Middlesex County” attorney, dedicated to his family, his profession, his community and the Association. The award is presented to a lawyer who carries on David’s commitment to service and represents the best of the Middlesex County Bar Association.

Manny served in the U. S. Navy for four years before beginning his studies at Rutgers University, graduating in 1963. He received his L.L.B. degree from New York Law School in 1967 and was admitted to the Bar that same year.

Manny has been actively involved in shaping the procedural aspects of the practice of Family Law in Middlesex County throughout his career. He was a founder, together with Martin S. Goldin, of the Middlesex County Bar Early Settlement Program (ESP) for Family Law cases and the program’s first Chairperson. Manny has been a panelist for the ESP program since its inception.

With Martin Goldin as Chair, Manny served as Vice-Chair of the Middlesex County Family Law Section for 20 years. He then served as Section Chair for the past nine years until his recent retirement. In 2009, he received the Edward Schoifet Family Law Award , the highest honor presented by the Family Law Section, commemorating the legacy of Edward Schoifet who passed away in 2006. Ed was considered the dean of the Middlesex County Family Bar and was recognized as a role model for all family law practitioners. Manny was chosen by his colleagues in recognition of his long career as an accomplished family law attorney during which he has been a conscientious advocate for his clients and a fair and just adversary.

Manny has been an active participant in the Assignment Judge’s Family Law Committee and a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association Family Law Section.

His integrity and high ethical standards, both personal and professional, have been acknowledged by members of the Bar. Manny was a member of the Middlesex County Ethics Committee for 29 years, serving as Chair of the committee for one year and as Secretary for 24 years, a position from which he resigned on December 31, 2013. In 1998 he received the Middlesex County Professional Lawyer of the Year Award from the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law.

He served on the Middlesex County Fee Dispute Committee for four years and on the Board of Trustees for the Middlesex County Bar Association.

Upon retiring, Manny plans to move to Florida with his wife of 46 years, Elaine. They are the parents of Robin Gerstein who is an Assistant U.S. Attorney with the Department of Justice, and of Steven Gerstein who is a Mortgage Banker with Freedom Mortgage Company. Manny and Elaine have three grandchildren: Madison, Alexis, and Chase.
