Megha R. Thakkar to Receive the
2016 Martin S. Goldin Family Law Award

The 2016 winner of the Martin S. Goldin Family Law Award is Megha R. Thakkar, Esq. Megha will be presented with the award on January 20, 2016, at the Association’s Annual Family Law Dinner Meeting, held at The Pines Manor in Edison. (Click here for event information.)

Martin S. Goldin, the Chair of the Family Law Section since its inception in 1972, passed away in 2002. Marty was regarded as a fair and reasonable adversary and was renowned for his good nature, collegiality and genuine respect for all members of the bench and bar. Marty took great pleasure in discussing legal issues with newer attorneys and generously gave his time to mentor any attorney who sought his counsel.

In February, 2003, the Family Law Section established the Martin S. Goldin Family Law Award, to be presented each year to a Family Law Practitioner who has been engaged in the practice for 15 years or less and who exemplifies those principles by which Marty practiced family law, including:  maintaining a continuous study of past and present case law; making a careful and detailed analysis of each case; presenting the issues and applicable law to clients in a readily understandable manner; attempting to settle issues on a fair and reasonable basis before resorting to litigation; fostering respect and courtesy for the bench and bar; maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism, and exhibiting leadership in the County or State Bar Association.

Megha epitomizes the qualities in a lawyer that were especially important to Marty and which he incorporated into his daily practice.  Megha is a zealous advocate for her clients and seeks practical solutions for their issues.  She takes time to understand the needs of her clients and is responsive to them in order to help them during a difficult time in their lives.  Megha is an exceptional writer, and her pleadings and submissions to the Court are meticulous.

As a first generation American whose parents came to the United States from India, Megha learned the value of education and hard work from her parents.  From them, she gained a strong work ethic, which she applies in the representation of her clients.

Megha received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics and Journalism from New York University in 2005. She received her Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University School of Law in 2008, where she was named to the Dean’s List.   Upon completing her law degree, Megha served as law clerk to the Hon. Andrea G. Carter, J.S.C., from 2008 to 2009.  She was a Senior Associate in the Office of Edward R. Weinstein, L.L.C. focusing on Family Law from 2009 to 2013.  In 2013, she joined Norris, McLaughlin & Marcus as an Associate Attorney in the Matrimonial and Family Law Practice Group.

An active member of the Middlesex County Bar Association, she has served as Trustee since 2011.  She actively participates in the Family Law Section, currently serving on the Committee for the Experts’ List.

Megha is a member of the District XIII Ethics Committee for Somerset County and a panelist for the Somerset County Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel.  She is an alternate panelist for the Middlesex County Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel, and will join the panel as  a regular member in January, 2016.  She was selected for inclusion in the New Jersey Super Lawyers – Rising Star Edition, 2014 and 2015.

In her free time, Megha enjoys spoiling her nieces and nephew and spending time with her family and friends.  She also enjoys Netflix, eating at great restaurants, spending time at the New Jersey Shore, and vacationing in tropical islands.

The Martin S. Goldin Award was previously presented to Robert M. Zaleski (2003), Lee Ann McCabe (2004), Cheryl Spilka (2005), Frank Tournour (2006), Steve Enis (2007), Gregg Rubenstein (2008), Lisa Vignuolo (2009), Daniel Brown (2010), Paula Menar (2011), Megan Murray (2012), Cheryl Connors (2013), and Angela F.
