Bar Association Seeks Attorneys for
New MCBA Lawyer Referral Service for RU Students

Attorney Application

The Office of Student Legal Services at Rutgers University (RU SLS) and the Middlesex County Bar Association have created a new reduced-fee lawyer referral service (RU LRS) to serve the myriad needs of RU students.  A key to RU SLS Director Don Heilman’s original proposal to the University was the existence of a large, talented and committed Bar Association right here in Middlesex County that already possessed a licensed and ABA-Certified Lawyer Referral Service.

The RU SLS provides students with an initial consultation on any law-related issue and is staffed by Director Heilman, who in addition to his law degree possesses a Masters of Education from Rutgers; Staff Attorney Michele Linder; and Administrative Assistant/Paralegal Maria Martino.

In its first semester of operation – Fall 2010 – RU SLS saw 75 students. In the spring semester that number jumped to 185. RU SLS is currently seeing students at a rate of 55 per month and they have seen matters covering 44 different areas of law.

Now in it's second year of operation, those matters the RU SLS office cannot handle will be referred to MCBA members who participate in this new RU LRS Program, ensuring that the students see competent local counsel who specialize in the necessary areas of practice.

RU SLS and the MCBA are looking for bar members to join the new service. The basic requirements are as follows:

  • Licensed to practice law in New Jersey;
  • MCBA Membership;
  • Professional Liability Insurance;
  • Attendance at a 2 credit CLE course on "College Students as a Special Population and Their Legal Issues";
  • Agree to provide a free initial consultation (up to 30 minutes); and
  • Agree to limit hourly counsel fees to no more than $75 (with exceptions based on specialties and the nature of the work involved).

The RU SLS is open to all students of every level and from all campuses in New Brunswick, Newark and Camden. At a current enrollment of 56,000 students, RU SLS Director Heilman expects Rutgers soon to be seeing students at a rate of 1,000-2,000 per year – the rate reported by other large state universities such as Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois and Ohio State.
