NJ CLE Credit Accepted in New York

New Jersey is a Mandatory Continuing Legal Education state. Every active NJ attorney is required to complete 24 credit hours of CLE every two years. Of those 24 credits, at least four must be in ethics and/or professionalism.  This requirement also includes attorneys with a plenary or limited license for the NJ Bar, Judges, In-House Corporate Counsel and attorneys who work for government entities.

During a newly admitted lawyer's first compliance period after admission to the NJ Bar, they must satisfy 15 of their 24 required credit hours in any five of the following nine subject areas:  NJ Basic Estate Administration; NJ Basic Estate Planning; NJ Civil or Criminal Trial Preparation; NJ Family Law Practice; NJ Real Estate Closing Procedures; NJ Trust and Business Accounting; NJ Landlord/Tenant Practice; NJ Municipal Court Practice; and NJ Law Office Management.

Compliance Reporting

Every active lawyer is permanently assigned to one of two compliance groups for CLE purposes, with one group reporting each year.

Those whose birthdays fall between January 1 and June 30 are in Compliance Group #1 and must certify their compliance on the Annual Attorney Registration Statement (or on such other form as provided by the Board on Continuing Legal Education) of each even numbered year next following the completion of a compliance period.

Those whose birthdays fall between July 1 and December 31 are in Compliance Group #2 and must certify their compliance on each odd numbered year next following the completion of a compliance period.
